Mount Gojūnin (Gojūninyama, 883.2 m) straddles Katsurao Village and the Miyakoji area of Tamura City in Fukushima Prefecture, within the Abukuma Highlands and the Abukuma Kōgen-Chūbu Prefectural Natural Park. Its name—literally "Fifty People Mountain"—comes from a legend that the Heian-era general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro seated fifty retainers on a great rock at the summit while planning his Emishi campaign. The twin peaks feature the namesake Gojūnin-ishi and a small shrine on the north summit and a triangulation point on the south, with a saddle meadow famous for lily-of-the-valley and azalea. It is one of the Utsukushima Hyakumeizan, with an annual 山開き (mountain-opening) ceremony held on a Sunday in late May.
