Mount Gion is a 1,307.3-metre peak in Kuraoka, Gokase Town, Nishi-Usuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, set near the centre of the north-south ridge running through the town. Fossils some 430 million years old—corals, trilobites and other Palaeozoic remains—have been recovered from its limestone strata, earning it the title of "birthplace of Kyūshū Island." Akebono rhododendrons bloom near the summit in spring, and the trail to the top includes rope- and chain-aided sections, with the route documented in the official guides of Gokase Town and the Gokase Tourism Association. The peak is listed in the Kyūshū Hyakumeizan, Miyazaki Hyakuzan and the Miyazaki prefectural mountain guide (Bunken Tōzan Guide).
