Mount Shiraiwa rises to 1,620 metres on the border of Gokase Town and Shiiba Village in Miyazaki Prefecture, within Kyushu Central Mountains Quasi-National Park. Its summit is crowned by a limestone crag some 60-70 metres high whose flora -- over 400 plant species, around 60 of them limestone endemics -- is a designated prefectural natural monument. Often climbed together with neighbouring Mount Mukozaka, it is one of the "100 Famous Mountains of Kyushu" and appears in the prefectural climbing guide to the mountains of Miyazaki.
