A small mountain hut near Kinomata-Dainichi on the Omote ridge of Tanzawa, about 1km east of Tonodake at roughly 1,380m. There is no electricity and no water source: the hut runs on lamplight and a cast-iron daruma stove, much as it did when the present owner took it over from his predecessor in April 2019. From Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu Odawara line the bus to Okura takes about 16 minutes, then it is roughly 3 hours 40 minutes up the Okura ridge to Tonodake and a further 25 minutes east along the crest. By car, the Masajiro ridge from Tozawa at the end of the Togawa forest road reaches the hut in about 2 hours 10 minutes. It opens mainly on Saturdays and Sundays, sleeps fourteen, and has no private rooms, so whoever turns up ends up talking to whoever else is there. Standing on the ridge, the hut disinfects and uses what rainwater it can collect and cannot spare any, so bring your own drinking water — and a headlamp.
