Publicly owned emergency shelter at about 2,050m beside Yamada Pass, where National Route 292 (the Shiga-Kusatsu Road) crosses the north side of Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. The Ministry of the Environment's national hut list registers it under Kusatsu Town, with the town's Planning and Creation Division as manager. Standing right by the highway, it is easy to reach from Shirane Kazan or Shibu Pass in summer, but this stretch of Route 292 closes every year from mid-November to late April. On foot, the hiking map published by Tsumagoi Village gives about one hour up from the Miharashidai lookout at Manza Onsen and about 30 minutes back down from the pass. Just north of the pass is the highest point reached by any national highway in Japan, at 2,172m, and the surroundings are the volcanic landscape of Kusatsu-Shirane.
