From the Mizugatsuka parking area on Fuji's southeast foot the route climbs through forest and along the rims of the second and first Hoei craters to the 2,693 m summit of Mount Hoei and back. The largest parasitic cone on Fuji, it was born in the great Hoei eruption of 1707, which came 49 days after the Hoei earthquake, and the three linked craters, numbered first to third from the top, are the scars of that eruption.
