From the trailhead in the Oki district of Onojo, this return climbs the 410 m Ogiyama, the highest point of the Shiojiyama hills. The hills hold the Ono Castle ruins, one of Japan's largest ancient mountain fortresses, built in 665 to guard Dazaifu and now a national special historic site with some 8 km of ramparts, stone walls and storehouse sites, and a lookout surveys the Fukuoka Plain and Hakata Bay.
