From the forest road on the Haruda side of Chikushino, this return enters the Kizan trailhead and climbs past the Otaki waterfall shrine and the northeast gate site to the 404 m summit of Mount Kizan. The whole mountain is the Kii Castle ruins, a Korean-style fortress built in 665 on Emperor Tenji's orders and now a national special historic site, and the open grassy summit looks over the plains of both Fukuoka and Saga.
