This return route climbs Mount Tawara in the southern outer rim of Aso from the Tawarayama Pass Viewpoint car park. It follows the southern outer-rim trail through grassland and along ridges to the 1,095 m summit. The open summit overlooks the Aso Five Peaks and Kumamoto Plain, with Unzen visible in clear weather.
