From near the Tawarayama exchange center Moe-no-Sato in Nishihara, this return climbs grassland slopes kept open by spring burning to the 1,095 m Mount Tawara at the western end of the Aso outer rim. Named for its resemblance to stacked rice bales seen from the Minami-Aso side, it is covered in silver grass in autumn, and the summit overlooks the Aso Five Peaks, the caldera and the Kumamoto Plain.
