Hiraniwa Kogen Ski Area trail map
Hiraniwa Kogen is a small ski area on a plateau in northern Iwate, set among vast stands of white birch. It is known for dry powder, and three pair lifts serve ten runs. The wide central slope suits beginners and families, while the Challenge course opens with a 30-degree wall and moguls and the Champion course holds fresh snow for stronger skiers; there is also a half-pipe. The Hiraniwa Sanso lodge at the base has guest rooms and the Shirakaba-no-yu hot-spring bath. The season runs from late December into March, about one to two hours by car from Morioka or Hachinohe.
