Mt. Ushimatsuyama

Ushimatsuyama is a 636-meter peak rising over Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, and its symmetrical cone has earned it the local name 'Tamba-Fuji'. At its foot stands the 'Moto-Atago' Atago Shrine, regarded as the head shrine of all Atago Shrines across Japan, and its Kamakura-period main hall is a designated Important Cultural Property. The Kotohira Shrine just below the summit is venerated by boatmen of the Hozugawa river-boat trade, who climb the mountain every January for the annual ascent. The Kameoka Tourism Association lists the trail from JR Kameoka Station via the Kotohira approach as one of the city's standard hiking model courses.
