Mt. Shizuki
指月山
Hagi, Yamaguchi · Elevation 145 m
Mt. Shizuki is a 145 m isolated peak rising from the northern tip of the Hagi delta on the Sea of Japan coast in the Horiuchi district of Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. In 1604 Mōri Terumoto exploited this natural fortress to build Hagi Castle, placing its main keep at the foot and a redoubt (詰丸) on the summit; after the castle's demolition in 1874 the grounds became Shizuki Park, and in 2015 the ruins were inscribed as a component of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution'. The summit forest — the northernmost native habitat of the Japanese camellia (Camellia sasanqua) on Honshu and home to chinquapin trees reckoned over 600 years old — was designated a National Natural Monument as 'Shizukiyama' in 1971, and the castle ruins a National Historic Site as 'Hagi-jō-ato' in 1951. The peak lies within Kita-Nagato Coast Quasi-National Park and appears in the Yamaguchi 100 Mountains and the Yamaguchi School Song Mountains.
