Mt. Sanbongui
三本杭
Uwajima, Ehime · Elevation 1,226 m
Mt. Sanbongui (1,226 m) is the highest peak of the Onigajō Range, rising in Uwajima City, Ehime, within Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Its name ("three stakes") derives from boundary markers placed at the summit during the Edo period to mark the borders of the Uwajima, Yoshida, and Tosa domains; it is also known as Mt. Namedoko after the Namedoko Gorge that lies on its northern flank. Trails ascend through the gorge past the famed Yukiwa Falls. Counted among Japan's 300 Famous Mountains and the 100 Famous Mountains of Shikoku, it draws hikers for rhododendron and Akebono azalea blooms from spring into early summer, and for rime ice in winter.
