Mt. Koshiōzan is a 183-meter low peak in the eastern urban district of Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture — the western edge of the Kitakami Mountains, southwest of Shin-Hanamaki Station. The summit hosts Koshiō Shrine, which traces its founding to 807 when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro is said to have enshrined a Yakushi-Nyorai statue from his helmet; the shrine still holds its traditional Somin Festival on January 2 each year. The Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Hall, opened in 1982 at the ninth-station level on the mountain, makes the peak a literary pilgrimage site, and it is included in the Iwate-no-Yama 150 list.
