Mt. Kinpokusan
金北山
Sado, Niigata · Elevation 1,172 m
Kinpoku-san (1,172 m) is the highest peak on Sado Island, in central-north Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, and the principal summit of the Ō-Sado Range. It is included in the 300 Famous Mountains of Japan and the (New) 100 Famous Flower Mountains, and the ridge traverse from Donden Plateau to the summit is celebrated for its sea-to-sea panoramas and abundant wildflowers. Originally simply called "Hokusan," it was renamed Kinpoku-san ("Gold North Mountain") after the opening of the Sado gold mines in the early Edo period; the summit retains a small shrine and the disused remains of a Japan Self-Defense Force radar installation. An advance hiking notification is required to use the SDF-managed road between the summit and Hakuun-dai.
