Mount Kongo

Mount Kongo is a 962 m peak in the northeastern part of Sado Island in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, one of the main summits of the Osado mountain range. Sea fog brought by moist winds nurtures a vast natural cedar forest on its northern slopes, while wind-swept ridges support a rich alpine flora. A small shrine and torii crown the summit, which commands all-round views. Together with Kinpoku-san and Dantokusan, Kongo was traversed in the medieval Shugendo "Three Mountains" pilgrimage. The peak is listed in the Echigo 100 Mountains and several other Niigata mountain compilations.
