Mt. Hiyama

Mt. Hiyama is a 244 m peak in the centre of the Itoshima Peninsula, in Shima, Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Its name (literally 'Fire Mountain') comes from its historic use as a signal-beacon site, from which monks lit pyres to warn the Dazaifu government of seaborne threats. Rurikōji Temple, founded in 839 by the priest Seigan and dedicated to Yakushi-Nyorai and Fudō-Myōō, stands near the ninth station. The summit commands views over Mt. Kaya and the Itoshima Plain, and the mountain is included in the Itoshima Tourism Association's 'Itoshima Yama-aruki' hiking guide.
