Mt. Hikami is an 874.7 m peak on the border between Rikuzentakata and Ōfunato cities in Iwate Prefecture, built on Hikami granite formed at the close of the Ordovician about 450 million years ago — among the oldest rocks in Japan. Long revered as a sacred mountain by local people, it commands a sweeping view of the Sanriku ria coastline and Hirota Bay from the summit, reaching as far as Mt. Kinka in Miyagi Prefecture. Three maintained trails — the Chūō, Tamayama and Suzuran courses — climb the peak, and the Rikuzentakata Tourism Association holds an annual mountain-opening ceremony each spring. Ruins of the medieval Tamayama gold mine remain on its slopes, and the mountain appears in the Tōhoku 100 Famous Mountains, the New 20 Mountains of Iwate, the prefectural climbing guide and many other selections, ranking as a representative peak of Iwate's coastal region.
