Mt. Hijiridake

A 416-meter foothill peak in the north of Ōmachi Town, Kishima District, Saga Prefecture, where it meets the boundary with Taku City — long regarded as the symbol of Ōmachi. A brick-built lookout, the Hijiridake Observatory completed by the town in 1989, crowns the summit and commands a sweeping view across the Shiroishi Plain and the winding Rokkaku River to the Ariake Sea and the Tara and Unzen-Fugen ranges beyond. The nearby Hijiridake Shrine behind the lookout houses a natural heart-shaped stone mortar revered as a love charm, and a hillside grove of pines — planted from 1904 as a Russo-Japanese War memorial and now over a century old — is designated as the prefecture's only registered famous-tree grove. A ridge trail joins the peak to neighbouring Mount Oni-no-Hana, and it is featured in the Bunken Tozan guide of Saga mountains.
