Mount Tenjin (166.8 m) — also known as Sakatari-yama — rises behind Hōfu Tenmangū Shrine in Matsuzaki, Hōfu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. According to tradition, a divine light appeared at the peak after the death of Sugawara no Michizane, and the shrine at its foot was founded in response, making it Japan's first Tenmangū and one of the country's three great Tenmangū. The mountain's foot also preserves the ruins of the ancient Suō provincial government office and the Suō Kokubun-ji temple. Today the slopes are laid out as Tenjinyama Park, with about 450 cherry trees, more than 1,100 plums, walking trails, and observation decks. The peak is listed among the 'Yamaguchi School-Song Mountains.'
