Mount Taromaru

A 281-meter rocky peak rising from the centre of Amakusa Kamishima Island in Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, paired with the slightly taller Mount Jiromaru (397 m) as the affectionate "brother peaks." Local legend tells how Taromaru, the elder brother, bowed his head so that his younger brother could see the Matsushima sunset, leaving him the shorter of the two. A shared trailhead leads up a varied two-hour course through rock features named Inazuma-gaeshi and Jiro-otoshi, with summit views over the five Amakusa Bridges and the multi-island seascape of the Yatsushiro and Ariake seas. The peak is included in the 100 Famous Mountains of Kyushu and the 100 Famous Low Mountains of Japan.
