Takachiho-no-mine is a 1,573 m stratovolcano in Takaharu Town, Nishimorokata District, Miyazaki Prefecture, near the boundary with Miyakonojo City, sitting at the eastern end of the Kirishima volcanic group within Kirishima-Kinkōwan National Park. Long revered as the landing place of Ninigi-no-Mikoto in the Tenson Kōrin myth, the summit is crowned by the spear known as Ame-no-Sakahoko and is venerated as the sacred body of Kirishima Higashi Shrine and Kirishima Jingū. The standard ascent climbs the 5.3 km round-trip, taking about three hours, from the Takachihogawara Visitor Center in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture (paid parking available) over Uma-no-Se and the Ohachi crater rim to the summit; alternative routes from Takaharu via the No. 5 sabō dam (Tenson Kōrin Course) and from Kirishima Higashi Shrine via Futagoishi are also maintained. The peak is famously associated with Sakamoto Ryōma and his wife O-Ryō, who climbed it on what is often called Japan's first honeymoon.
