Mount Ōnogara

Mount Ōnogara (1,236 m) is the highest peak of the Takakuma Mountains, straddling Kanoya and Tarumizu in Kagoshima Prefecture, and the highest point on the Ōsumi Peninsula. As the core of Takakumayama Prefectural Natural Park, its slopes preserve significant stands of beech forest designated as a forest-genetic-resource reserve. From the summit hikers enjoy a sweeping panorama of Sakurajima, Kinkō Bay, and the Ōsumi Peninsula. Together with Mitake, Yokodake, and Tsumadake it is one of the principal peaks of the Takakuma range and is listed in the 300 Famous Japanese Mountains and the Kyūshū 100.
