Mount Onigajō

Mount Onigajō is a 544-metre peak in northern Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, rising on the ridge that formed the old border between Tamba and Tango Provinces, and the southern outpost of the Ōeyama Range. The medieval Onigajō mountain fortress that once stood on its summit was captured in 1575 by Akechi Mitsuhide during Oda Nobunaga's Tamba campaign, and stone-wall remnants still survive. The peak is bound up with the demon legends of Ibaraki-dōji and Shuten-dōji; a hiking trail climbs from Muroodani Kannonji Temple in the Ōe district, and a ridge traverse links the peak to neighbouring Karasugadake to the south. It is listed in the Kyoto prefectural mountain guide (Bunken Tōzan Guide) and the Kyoto Prefecture 339 Mountains.
