Mount Himegami

姫髪山

Mount Himegami is a 406.1-metre isolated peak in the eastern part of Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, rising over the city centre on the left bank of the Yura River. Each August during Obon its slopes are lit with the giant character "大" of the Tamba Daimonji send-off fire, a tradition still observed today. A hiking trail climbs from Chōan-ji Temple on its lower slopes; the summit preserves the ruins of a small fortification, Himegamiyama Castle, together with a long-told legend of a doomed romance between the lord's daughter and a senior retainer. The peak is counted among the Fukuchiyama Tourism Association's Ten Beloved Local Peaks and is listed in the Kyoto Prefecture 339 Mountains.
