Mount Oboko

Mount Oboko is a 999.5 m peak in Yakumo Town of Hokkaido, rising along the central spine of the Oshima Range on the Oshima Peninsula. Its Ainu name 'Kamui-e-roski' means 'a place where a god stands', and Yakumo Ainu lore tells of a deity who appeared on its summit to drive away a plague visiting the lower Yūrap village. The eroded summit forms a sharp pyroclastic crag with an immense rock wall on its north-east face. The classic ascent from the old mine site above Yakumo Onsen Oboko-sō passes the Ginryū waterfall in about 4 km, and the summit commands views of both Uchiura Bay and the Sea of Japan. It is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Hokkaido.
