Mount Nozuka

野塚岳

Mount Nozuka is a 1,352.6 m twin-peaked mountain on the border between Hiroo and Urakawa towns in southern Hokkaido, in the southern Hidaka Range. Its name derives from the Nozuka River ('nupka-pet', or 'field river' in Ainu) at its eastern foot. The Nozuka Tunnel of National Route 236 — the Tenma Road — runs directly beneath the mountain, connecting the Hidaka and Tokachi regions. No maintained trail climbs the peak; it is reached only via expert stream-climbs of the Pon-san-no-sawa from Hiroo or the Niobetsu River from Urakawa. The mountain lies within Hidaka-Sanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park designated in 2024 and is counted among Hokkaido's 100 Famous Mountains.
