Mount Mitake

Mount Mitake is a 789.9-metre bell-shaped andesite volcano in northern Shūnan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, rising as a distinctive twin-summit cone north of Lake Kōdō and comprising the three peaks of Ichi-no-take, Ni-no-take, and San-no-take. The mountain has been revered since AD 728, when the deity Zaō Gongen was said to have been transferred here from Yoshino in Nara, and its sacred grove of Myōjin-no-Yabu lies on its western slope. Locally called Mitake-san from the Kinpō side and Kinpō-zan from the Ōmukai side, its summit bears a second-class triangulation point and a 360-degree view, and the peak appears on the Yamaguchi 100 Meizan, Bōchō Hyakuzan, and Chūgoku Region 100 Mountains lists.
