Mount Kamui

Mount Kamui is a 1,600.2 m peak straddling Urakawa and Taiki towns in southern Hokkaido, sitting in the Hidaka Range within Hidaka-Sanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park. Its name comes from the Ainu "Kamui-Nupuri" ("mountain of the gods"), and it is listed in the Nihon Sanbyaku Meizan and the Hokkaidō Hyakumeizan. The single recognised approach climbs from the Motoura River forest road in Urakawa, working up the Nishuomanai River past Kamui Sansō hut and finishing with stream-walking and steep ridge climbing to the summit — a sustained route that requires confidence with river crossings and rugged ridge work, and is regarded as advanced grade in the same league as Peteggari-dake and Naka-dake. The Hokkaidō Forest Administration Office (Hidaka-Nanbu Branch) publishes the official climbing information, and access is heavily dependent on forest-road conditions, so checking ahead is essential.
