Mount Iozan, known as Shiretoko-Iozan to distinguish it from other namesakes, is a 1,562-meter andesitic stratovolcano at the heart of Hokkaido's Shiretoko Peninsula, straddling Shari and Rausu towns, with the summit on the Shari side. Active since roughly 240,000 years ago, it continually emits gases from summit and flank fumaroles and is internationally noted for occasionally erupting large flows of molten sulfur. The peak lies within Shiretoko National Park and the Shiretoko UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Shiretoko violets grow on gravelly ground near the summit.
