The 816.6-meter principal peak of Shodoshima Island and the highest summit in the entire Seto Inland Sea, in Shodoshima Town, Shozu District, Kagawa Prefecture. The mountain rises from andesite and tuff laid down by volcanism about 13 million years ago, with the western slopes dropping into Kankakei—one of Japan's three great scenic gorges and a centerpiece of Setonaikai National Park. The summit holds the ruins of Hoshigajo Castle, raised around 1339 by the Southern Court vassal Sasaki Nobotane and overrun in 1347 by Hosokawa Moroji of the Northern Court; bailey terraces, dry moats, wells, and signal-fire platforms survive on both the eastern and western peaks. The summit is reached in about an hour on foot from the upper station of the Kankakei Ropeway, and the peak appears in many designated lists including the 100 Famous Mountains of Shikoku, 100 Famous Island Mountains, and the 100 Famous Low Mountains of Japan.
