Hiyoriyama

Hiyoriyama is a 3 m artificial mound in the Gamō district of Sendai's Miyagino Ward, facing the Gamō tidal flat just south of Sendai Port. Originally built up to observe sea weather (hiyori), it appeared on Geospatial Information Authority of Japan maps in 1991 at a then-height of 6.05 m and was celebrated as "Japan's lowest mountain." After Osaka's Tenpōzan (4.5 m) took that title it styled itself the "original lowest mountain." The 2011 Tōhoku tsunami nearly erased it, and a 2014 GSI survey re-measured it at 3 m, restoring its claim as the lowest mountain in Japan.
