伊吹山 六合目避難小屋

Unstaffed emergency shelter at about 980m, at the sixth station of the Omote trail up Mount Ibuki (1,377m), the highest peak in Shiga Prefecture, in Ueno, Maibara City. It is the only shelter Maibara City lists on that trail, standing on the open grassy slope above the fifth station where there is neither shade nor water, and it is the one place on the upper mountain to get out of wind, rain or lightning. The ground around it is open, with views stretching from Lake Biwa across the Kohoku plain. Maibara City's trail map allows 105 minutes from the Ueno trailhead (220m) to the third station, 45 minutes on to the fifth station and 80 minutes from there to the summit; the climb gains about 1,200m and the round trip takes seven to eight hours. The trailhead is about 16 minutes by Kokoku Bus from JR Omi-Nagaoka Station to the Ibuki Tozanguchi stop, and a seasonal climbing bus runs from Maibara Station between roughly May and September. The Shiga side of the mountain lies within Biwako Quasi-National Park and the summit grassland is a nationally designated natural monument, so tents and all open flames, camp stoves included, are prohibited. Heavy rain in July 2023 destroyed long sections of the Omote trail and debris flows followed in July 2024, so entry from the Maibara-side foot of the mountain is banned and this shelter is closed.
