Publicly owned emergency shelter at about 1,010m along the Hokkyurei route on Mt. Sumon, whose main peak Hakamadake rises to 1,537.2m, in Tochibori, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. It stands on the way from Hokkyurei over Fudodaira to Sumon Odake; this is the most popular line on the mountain, and even beginners are said to be able to continue from Odake to Seiundake and Hakamadake. The surrounding beech woods carry a great deal of mistletoe and are known for their birdlife. The Hokkyurei trailhead is about 90 minutes by car from the Nagaoka interchange on the Kan-etsu Expressway or the Nakanoshima-Mitsuke interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway, via national routes 8, 351 and 290; reaching it by public transport is not practical, and the prefectural road beyond the Kariyatagawa dam is closed from late November to mid-May. The mountain-opening for Sumon Odake falls on the fourth Sunday of May. The Ministry of the Environment's national hut list names the commerce and tourism division of Nagaoka City's Tochio branch office as the manager.
