Unstaffed shelter of Nagaoka City at about 765m, standing in beech forest at the trailhead of the Hokkyurei route, the most popular way up Sumondake. From here the path climbs by way of Kibitaki Goya and Fudodaira to Odake — about two hours — and the ridge runs on over Seiundake to the main summit, Hakamadake (1,538m), about 3 hours 30 minutes in all. The route is known for the mistletoe growing on the beeches and for its abundant birdlife, and is considered manageable for beginners. The season opens on the fourth Sunday of May each year. It is 75 to 85 minutes by car from Nagaoka Station, or about 90 minutes from the Nagaoka or Nakanoshima-Mitsuke interchanges via Routes 8, 351 and 290, with parking for 30 cars at the trailhead. The prefectural road to Hokkyurei is closed beyond the Kariyatagawa dam from late November until mid-May.
