Okumusashi Ski Area Closed
Official name 奥武蔵スキー場
Saitama
Opened in 1934
Okumusashi Ski Area was a pre-war ski hill near Karibasaka Pass on the Okumusashi plateau in Saitama, on common grassland of what is now Tokigawa town. The Musashino Railway, forerunner of Seibu, opened it in the winter of 1934 to draw winter passengers to its Agano line, with a hut, electric lighting and two slopes above 800 m. In the heavy snow of 1936, buses from Agano Station ran full of skiers with skis racked on the back, but that was its only busy season. Snow was scarce in the following years and the ski area quietly disappeared.
