Mt. Yakumo is a 423.9 m peak on the boundary between Yakumo-chō Kumano in Matsue City and Daitō-chō in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, the principal summit of "Suga-yama" recorded in the Izumo Fudoki. The Okumiya inner shrine of Suga-jinja stands within the mountain, where, by legend, Susanoo-no-Mikoto built a palace with Princess Inada after slaying the Yamata-no-Orochi and composed the poem "Yakumo tatsu Izumo yaegaki…," celebrated as the birthplace of waka poetry. A literary-monument path winds up the approach, and the summit observation deck looks out over Mt. Daisen, Mt. Sanbe, Lake Nakaumi, Lake Shinji, and the Oki Islands.
