Mt. Shinzan, 286.6 m, is a low coastal-zone hill at the northern edge of the Abukuma Highlands on the border of Yamamoto Town (Wataari District) and Kakuda City in Miyagi Prefecture. At its base lies the Shinzan-sanroku Shōnen-no-Mori — a town-run recreation park with a rest house, BMX course and grass plazas. Two roughly 1-km nature-observation trails (the Komagaeshi and Takauchi courses) climb past log bridges and gazebos to an open summit plaza that looks east to the Pacific Ocean and west to the Zaō Mountains over the Kakuda Basin. The peak is a classic beginners' route in the Miyagi Bunken Tozan Guide, and over twenty bird species including bunting, bush warbler and brown-eared bulbul can be seen along its slopes.
