Mt. Ryozen (610 m) rises in the southern part of Oita City and is counted among the Oita Hyakuzan and Shin-Oita Hyakuzan. Ryozenji, a Tendai Buddhist temple with over 1,300 years of history, sits on its slopes, and the peak's name is said to derive from India's Vulture Peak. Its well-preserved evergreen broadleaf forest is designated a prefectural nature conservation area, and overlooks along the trails command sweeping views over the city.
