Mt. Monomi (also called Taneyama, 871 m) is the highest summit of the Taneyama-ga-hara plateau — an 11 × 20 km highland straddling Ōshū City, Sumita Town and Tōno City in southern Iwate Prefecture. The gentle ridge-and-plateau terrain at 600–870 m has been used as horse pasture since the feudal era and inspired Miyazawa Kenji to set the children's tale "Kaze no Mata-Saburō" and "Taneyama-ga-hara" here. It is included in the New 100 Flower Mountains, the Iwate 100 and Tanaka Sumie's 50 Mountains of Flowers and History lists. From the prefectural youth center the summit is only a ten-minute walk, where a first-order triangulation point and a tall radio relay tower stand.
