Mt. Miou is a 706.7 m peak on the border between Yamakuni-machi in Nakatsu City and Hita City in Ōita Prefecture, lying within Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park southwest of the Yabakei scenic area. Its three-character name 一尺八寸 (literally "one shaku eight sun," about 58 cm) refers to a legend that the combined tails of three wild boars hunted here measured that length, and it is read "miou" — meaning "three tails." The mountain placed first in the 1996 NIFTY-Serve contest for Japan's hardest-to-read mountain name. The peak is featured in the Ōita Low Mountains guide.
