Mt. Kumayama
熊山
Akaiwa, Okayama · Elevation 509 m
Kumayama is a 508.6 m peak in Akaiwa City, Okayama Prefecture, the highest summit in the southern part of the prefecture. Long regarded as sacred, its slopes preserve more than thirty stone structures, the largest of which—the 'Kumayama Ruins,' a tiered stone pyramid believed to be a Buddhist pagoda from the Nara period—is a National Historic Site. The summit observation deck commands views across the Seto Inland Sea as far as Yashima on Shikoku, and well-maintained trails climb from JR Kumayama Station. The peak appears in the Chūgoku Hyakumeizan, the Okayama Prefecture Hyakumeizan and Nihon-no-Yama 1000.
