Mt. Kōtsuzan (1,133 m) rises in Yamakawa-chō of Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture, and is known as Awa-Fuji for its symmetrical conical profile. Its summit holds Kōtsu-ji, a Shugendō temple said to have been founded in the 7th century by En no Gyōja and later visited by Kūkai for ascetic training. Three trails climb from Yamakawa, Kawada and Anabuki; on 18 August each year the women-prohibited Jūhachi-zan ceremony with a great goma fire ritual is held. The peak is included in the Shikoku Hyakumeizan, Nihon Hyaku-Fuji and Nihon Hyakuteizan lists.
