Kannabiyama is a 221 m hill rising at the southwest edge of Kyōtanabe City, Kyoto, with a distinctive twin profile formed by the eastern Odakeyama (221.0 m) and the western Medakeyama (201.6 m). It has been venerated since ancient times as a kannabi — a mountain inhabited by deities — and is said to have served, together with Funaokayama to the north, as the southern reference point for the central axis of Heian-kyō. Kannabi Shrine sits just below the summit, and the city publishes an official trail map for the well-maintained network of paths through cherry, maple and bird-watching groves on its slopes.
