Mt. Honzan is a 715 m peak in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, the highest of the Oga Peninsula and the central peak of the Oga Three Mountains together with Shinzan and Kenashiyama, within Oga Quasi-National Park. Long worshipped as the seat of Akagami-Gongen, the mountain has been a center of mountain ascetic practice since the late Heian period along the "Daibōdō" pilgrim route, with Akagami-jinja's inner shrine standing at the summit. From the southern Monzen approach, the famous 999-step stone staircase climbs to the Akagami-jinja Goshadō, and the traditional "Oyamakake" pilgrimage traverses all three peaks. The peak appears in the Japan 100 Low-Famous Mountains, Yoshida Rui's 30 Low Mountains, the Akita Prefecture mountains guidebook, the Japan Famous Mountain Atlas, Zoku Shizukanaru Yama, and the Japan 1003 Mountain Elevations lists.
