Mt. Ashitakeyama (815 m) rises in Honmura-chō of Shōbara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is known as the "Japanese Pyramid" for its distinctive triangular profile visible from every direction. Long associated with a legend that it served as the mausoleum of Emperor Jimmu, the mountain is dotted with megaliths such as Taka-iwa, Jinmu-iwa and Kagami-iwa, and was famously declared by researcher Sakai Katsutoki in 1934 to be the world's oldest pyramid sanctuary, paired with neighbouring Mt. Onisaki as its worship hall. It remains a popular power spot and is included in the Hiroshima Hyakuzan list.
