Mt. Aono

青野山

Mt. Aono is a 907.6 m lava dome (Tholoid-type volcano) rising east of the Tsuwano basin in Tsuwano Town, Kanoashi District, Shimane Prefecture. Together with several satellite cones such as Ko-Aono it forms the Aono-yama Prefectural Natural Park (alongside Tsuwano Castle Hill). A small Sannō shrine, traditionally venerated for rain-bringing and insect-banishing prayers, stands on the summit, which offers views as far as the Sea of Japan on clear days. The maintained trail from JR Aonoyama Station (Aonogawara trailhead) or the Sasayama trailhead off Route 9 takes about an hour each way. Listed in Chūgoku 100 Mountains and other regional guides.
