Mount Ōtakine
大滝根山
Tamura, Fukushima · Elevation 1,193 m
Mount Ōtakine is a 1,192.5 m peak straddling Tamura City and Kawauchi Village in Futaba District, Fukushima Prefecture, the highest summit of the Abukuma Highlands. The limestone massif holds extensive karst topography, including Japan's renowned Abukumadō and Irimizu show caves on its lower flanks. It is listed in the Nihon Sanbyaku Meizan, the Hana no Hyakumeizan, the Shin Hana no Hyakumeizan, and the Utsukushima 100 Meizan, and falls within Abukuma-Kōchi Prefectural Natural Park. A Japan Air Self-Defense Force radar station (the Ōtakine Bunton Base) occupies the immediate summit, so reaching the first-order triangulation marker requires prior permission from the base. The standard ascents climb from the Ōgoe trailhead or the Sendai-daira trailhead on the west side — each a 1.5–2 hour one-way climb — and pass the clear stream of Onigorō Gorge along with several waterfalls including Antei-no-Taki and Shidareyanagi-no-Taki.
