Mount Okinakura

Mount Okinakura (532 m) straddles the Tsuyama district of Tome City and the Kitakami district of Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, and as the highest peak in the southern Kitakami Mountains it is also the high point of both municipalities. The summit is set within the Okinakurayama Prefectural Nature Conservation Area, where remnants of beech–bamboo grassland, oak secondary forest, and red-pine stands have sheltered Japan's third confirmed golden-eagle nesting site since 1955, the first known canopy nest in the country. Standard routes climb from Ōginuzawa in Tsuyama (about one hour) and from Onagawa in Kitakami (about two hours); the summit commands views of Shizugawa Bay, the Pacific, Kinkazan, and the Zao range.
